BMW expanded its restricted parts list to include the 3 Series and other models, effective immediately. At the same time, Rhode Island's legislature sent bills to the governor that would raise the total loss threshold to 85%, narrowing the window where insurers can total a vehicle.

OEM

1. BMW expands restricted parts; 3 Series now included

BMW notified its Certified Collision Repair Centers this month that additional models now fall under its restricted parts policy. You can no longer source certain components from non-OEM suppliers on 3 Series repairs. This affects estimate accuracy, cycle time, and supplement frequency on bread-and-butter jobs.

Mark says: Pull the updated BMW parts list before your next 3 Series estimate hits the rack.

INSURANCE

2. Rhode Island total loss threshold rises to 85%

Rhode Island's legislature passed bills raising the total loss threshold from its current level to 85%, now heading to the governor's desk. This means insurers will be forced to repair more vehicles instead of totaling them, even when damage is substantial. Your supplement volume and cycle times will climb.

Mark says: If you write Rhode Island claims, expect longer repairs and more supplements under the new 85% threshold.

TRAINING

3. United ADAS Collective launches on-demand training

Revv has rolled out on-demand ADAS courses through the United ADAS Collective, letting techs complete practical training on their own schedule. The program targets the persistent skills gap in the industry. If your team is short on calibration bandwidth, this removes the excuse of scheduling constraints.

Mark says: Sign up one tech this week if you're running behind on camera recalibrations or ADAS diagnostics.

4. Axalta-AkzoNobel merger vote set for August 5

Axalta's stockholders will vote August 5 on the proposed all-stock merger with AkzoNobel. The SEC cleared the registration statement. If the deal closes, the combined entity will reshape the coatings supply chain. Timing and product availability could shift.

Mark says: Monitor your Axalta paint lead times; supply chain changes could hit in Q4 if the merger closes.

5. Kinetic opens three new ADAS hubs in Arizona and LA

Kinetic, which operates a network of dedicated ADAS calibration facilities, opened two Phoenix locations and its first Los Angeles-area hub. The expansion signals demand for standalone ADAS capacity in high-volume markets. If you sublet calibrations, you now have more competition and faster turnaround options in these regions.

Mark says: If you're in Phoenix or LA and not billing for ADAS, competitors with three new local options now can undercut your turnaround.
